Malama Hale  An 808 Urban Arts and Community Organizing Program

Mission and Description of Malama Hale

The mission of Malama Hale is to empower low-income communities on Oahu through art production and cultural events.

Malama Hale will be housed at Mayor Wright Homes in Kalihi, the oldest and one of the largest low-income residencies on Oahu.

Starting in April 2009, we will hold outdoor community art-making events on the first Saturdays of each month, from 11am-4pm.  There will be music and entertainment, food and multiple art activities for residents and families of all ages.  Murals, mixed-media arts and photo projects will focus on cultural and community awareness.  Guest musicians and community speakers will be featured.  The event is free to all residents and neighbors.

As we receive more funding, we wish to create weekly workshops that focus on art technique and production.  Unlike the monthly community events, these workshops are classroom oriented, and focus on artistic development that will feed into the monthly events.

Malama Hale is made possible by the generosity and support of the Hawaii Peoples Fund.
